The 112th edition of the Australian Open is just around the corner, signifying the short offseason in tennis and how the stars of men’s tennis will soon hit the courts again.
The 2024 Australian Open is the most anticipated of the lot with major talking points headlining the showpiece event that will commence on Sunday, January 14, 2024, marking the first time that the year’s first Grand Slam will have a weekend start.
As is the norm, the Australian Open is played on outdoor hard courts at Melbourne Park, with a 128-player singles field expected to converge there in the early weeks of January. The entry list for the tournament has been released.
Novak Djokovic secured top seeding at the Australian Open thanks to his record-breaking 7th ATP Finals in November and will pursue a record-extending 11th title. Djokovic is not guaranteed to remain No. 1 after the tournament in Melbourne, with Carlos Alcaraz expected to challenge him on that front.
Alcaraz, the second seed, missed last year’s extravaganza due to injury, but he’ll look to make up for his absence in 2024. Except for Casper Ruud, Rafael Nadal, and Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Top 10 has the same look from 12 months ago.
Former finalist Daniil Medvedev has a point to prove after a disappointing early exit in 2023, while Jannik Sinner will aim to go better than the fourth round he managed last season.
Nadal will make his Grand Slam return at this event and is one of seven players entering the Australian Open with a Protected Ranking. Denis Shapovalov, Marin Cilic, and Reilly Opelka are some of the other players from the injured caravan who have recovered.
The tournament has reserved eight main draw wild cards, which will be granted on merit, preferably to younger players. But home crowd favorite Nick Kyrgios will most likely benefit from this should he deem himself fit enough to compete.
Sixteen players will book their spots in the main draw through qualifying, which will have a strong presence, too, with newly-crowned Nex Gen Finals champion Hamad Medjedovic among those expected to lead the charge. You can see the full entry list below.
