The famed Hopman Cup returned last year in Nice with a successful edition that featured Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz, but it won’t be coming back this year.
The first time the Hopman Cup came back after being defunct since 2019 was last year. There wasn’t any event since 2019 because the preseason ahead of the Australian Open was a bit reorganized, pushing the event out of the calendar.
It made a comeback with a reformed version last year in Nice, France, as the hosting site, and it went well. The first edition proved to be quite successful, with Croatia winning the competition on the backs of Borna Coric and Donna Vekic.
They beat Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi and Celine Naef 2-0 in the final, lifting the trophy. The top names at the event were Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, who both played, but neither really played that well.
Neither was able to lead their team to the final, and they won’t be able to this year either. The event won’t be played this year because it would have conflicted with the Olympic Games. Last year’s Hopman Cup was played days after Wimbledon concluded.
That’s why many were surprised to see Carlos Alcaraz at the event, considering he just had a long fortnight in London, and it wasn’t even a full week after the Wimbledon final.
This year, the announcement came from the event on social media, as they let fans know that a decision was made together with the International Tennis Federation.
The event won’t be played because it’s close to the Olympics, but it’s not the end of the competition. It’s coming back next year in 2025.
