2024 Roland Garros: Iga Swiatek Set to Face Jasmine Paolini

Iga Swiatek will try to win a historic third consecutive Roland Garros trophy on Saturday, but Jasmine Paolini will try to stop her in the final.

The first of these potential triplet of trophies came in 2022 when she bested Coco Gauff in the final. Last year, the Polish player bested Karolina Muchova, and in the upcoming final, Jasmine Paolini will try to stop her.

The Italian might be the least famous name out of all of those players but don’t underestimate her. She will, at worst, be world number 7 on the next WTA Rankings, and that obviously didn’t happen out of thin air.

She’s played amazing tennis for a while now, across the board, which is quite impressive because she’s not the most impressive physically.

Swiatek will be a huge favorite in this match simply because she dominated, including in the last match against Coco Gauff. She’s on a 20-match winning streak at Roland Garros, which seems unlikely to stop anytime soon.

Head-to-head:

The two final protagonists have played twice so far, once in 2018 on the ITF level and once in 2022 at the US Open. That match at the US Open went 6-3, 6-0 for Swiatek, but it was played before this Paolini’s rise.

Even so, it shows a glaring problem for Paolini: her inability to counter Swiatek well. It’s going to be even tougher on clay because the Pole is a superb mover and hits the ball really hard, which will be very hard for the Italian to counter. She’ll have to work overtime, and even then, it’s pretty unlikely that she’ll win.

Prediction:

This matchup favours Swiatek heavily and on top of that, it will be her fourth time playing in the final on the Court Philippe-Chatrier, while it will be a first for her much less experienced opponent.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in two sets.
