Royal St George's to host 2025 Amateur Championship - Golf News

The 130th Amateur Championship is set to take place at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent next year, as the renowned Kent links has been selected as one of the host venues for major R&A-organised events in 2025.

Harry Ellis emerged victorious the last time The Amateur Championship was held at Royal St George’s in 2017. Meanwhile, Royal Cinque Ports, which hosted the championship in 2013, will host the pre-qualifying event on June 13.

The Sandwich-based club, which will host the 130th Amateur Championship from June 16-21, 2025, has a rich history of hosting major events, including the Open Championship 16 times, most recently in 2021 dating back to 1894.

The top women amateurs will head to the Highlands in Scotland as Nairn, the venue for The Women’s Amateur in 2021, will host The 122nd Women’s Amateur Championship from June 9-14. Broadcaster Maureen Madill claimed the title when Nairn last hosted the Championship in 1979.

The Walker Cup, the biennial competition between leading male amateurs from GB&I and the USA, will take place at Cypress Point in California from September 6-7, 2025, with Dean Robertson leading the visiting team.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, stated, “It is crucial to highlight The R&A’s amateur championships and international matches as premier events in global elite amateur golf. Our aim is to attract the best players from around the world to compete, and that’s why it’s fitting to have our championships and international matches hosted at some of the finest venues globally in 2025.”

The R&A Girls’ and Boys’ Amateur Championships will be hosted at Conwy and County Louth respectively in August, with the R&A Girls’ U16 Amateur Championship scheduled for Gog Magog in April. The R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur Championships will be held concurrently at Walton Heath in July.

Several other international matches between GB&I and the Continent of Europe will also occur. The St Andrews Trophy will be held at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Spain in July, while Royal Hague Golf & Country Club in the Netherlands will welcome the Vagliano and Junior Vagliano trophies for women and girls a month earlier. The boys’ equivalent match for the Jacques Léglise Trophy will be played in August at the Royal Golf Club of Belgium.

The realignment that sees the Walker Cup and St Andrews Trophy being played in the same year is part of the schedule changes. Starting in 2026, the Walker Cup will shift to even years, and the St Andrews Trophy will move to odd years from 2025 onwards.
