After the excitement in Monte Carlo, the ATP Tour transitions back to two-week Masters 1000 events featuring 96-player draws. The 2025 Madrid Open draw was announced on Monday, with main draw matches starting on Wednesday, 23rd April.
Top seed Alexander Zverev enters the tournament following a title win in Munich, while second seed Carlos Alcaraz, a two-time champion, carries momentum from Monte Carlo but has injury worries stemming from Barcelona.
Alcaraz excels on home soil, holding a 29-2 record on Spanish clay since 2022. After capturing Monte Carlo and reaching the Barcelona final, he will begin his campaign against either Zizou Bergs or Yoshihito Nishioka.
Novak Djokovic, a three-time winner, returns to Madrid after a year-long absence, striving for his 100th career title. However, his performances this season have been subpar, and historically, Madrid has been his least successful Masters 1000 event.
Meanwhile, Zverev, a two-time champion (2018, 2021), aims to capitalize on his victory against Ben Shelton in Munich. He faces either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jaume Munar in the first round, with aspirations to break a pattern of fourth-round exits.
Holger Rune, rejuvenated from his title victory in Barcelona, hopes to build on his final at Indian Wells, where he will play against Flavio Cobolli or Fabian Marozsan to start.
Second-ranked Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, currently 10th in the Race to Turin after reaching finals in Acapulco and Delray Beach and a semi-final at Monte Carlo, could pose a threat to Zverev in the third round.
The wild cards add further intrigue, with Miami standout Coleman Wong facing Federico Cina in round one, joined by veterans Marin Cilic, Pablo Carreno Busta, and rising star Martin Landaluce.

Thoughts on the Draw
Seeded Players: (1) Alexander Zverev, (3) Taylor Fritz, (7) Andrey Rublev, (8) Holger Rune, (9) Daniil Medvedev, (12) Ben Shelton, (13) Arthur Fils, (14) Casper Ruud, (18) Felix Auger-Aliassime, (20) Francisco Cerundolo, (22) Jakub Mensik, (23) Sebastian Korda, (25) Alexei Popyrin, (27) Hubert Hurkacz, (28) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, (31) Brandon Nakashima
Top seed Alexander Zverev starts in R2 after a bye, facing either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jaume Munar.
Zverev’s season has been inconsistent; he was a runner-up at the Australian Open but lacked impact in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo. He found form by winning the BMW Open in Munich, bringing momentum into Madrid.
It is likely he’ll face Munar, who has been a tough competitor for seeded players this season, including an upset against Medvedev in Miami.
A possible third-round clash with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, arguably in the best form of his career, could be compelling.
In the fourth round, he may contend with either Arthur Fils or Francisco Cerundolo. Given his recent win in Munich and the absence of pressure to become world number one, Zverev should approach his matches with more freedom.
In the quarter-finals, he could meet Ben Shelton or Andrey Rublev, with Zverev holding an advantage over Shelton after their recent final encounter.
The bottom half presents a significant challenge, featuring Taylor Fritz, Sebastian Korda, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Holger Rune.
An exciting all-American fourth-round matchup between Fritz and Korda is possible, but recent performances suggest Rune could reach the quarters, likely against Fritz if he regains his full fitness.
Bottom Half
Seeded Players: (2) Carlos Alcaraz, (4) Novak Djokovic, (5) Jack Draper, (6) Alex de Minaur, (10) Lorenzo Musetti, (11) Tommy Paul, (15) Grigor Dimitrov, (16) Frances Tiafoe, (17) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (19) Tomas Machac, (21) Ugo Humbert, (24) Karen Khachanov, (26) Jiri Lehecka, (29) Denis Shapovalov, (30) Matteo Berrettini, (32) Sebastian Baez
Novak Djokovic takes the spotlight in the top quarter of the bottom half, supported by Jack Draper, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Matteo Berrettini.
Djokovic opens against either Matteo Arnaldi or a qualifier. A potential third-round match with Sebastian Baez or Mattia Bellucci awaits. Djokovic’s unpredictability makes this a challenging section for him.
If Tiafoe advances, he may face Djokovic, where past experiences suggest Djokovic could have the advantage.
Jack Draper, fresh off his breakthrough in Indian Wells, will likely enjoy Madrid’s conditions, but his path to the quarter-finals could involve Tallon Griekspoor, Berrettini, and Paul.
The bottom quarter is loaded with Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, Grigor Dimitrov, Denis Shapovalov, and Tomas Machac.
A possible showdown between Alcaraz and Musetti awaits if both reach the last eight. Despite a recent injury scare, Alcaraz remains the favorite if fit, but de Minaur’s solid performance this season suggests he could also make a deep run against potentially unsteady opponents.
