The first of five senior major championships in 2024 is the Regions Tradition, with Greystone Golf & Country Club playing host.
The event has a 35-year history, dating back to the end of 1980s when it became the fifth senior major championship on the calendar.
Greystone Golf & Country Club is the regular host of the first senior major of the year, with the tournament being held at the Alabama venue since 2016.
Players who feature on both the PGA Champions Tour and the European Legends Tour will be in action.
Recent winners of the Regions Tradition include Steve Stricker, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Bernhard Langer.

When and where will the Regions Tradition take place?
As always, this year’s edition of the Regions Tradition will take place at Greystone Golf & Country Club. The event will be played on the Founders Course at the venue, which is in Birmingham, Alabama, from May 9-12.
Who won last season’s tournament?
American Steve Stricker was the victor at the 2023 Regions Tradition, finishing the event 23-under-par. It was the second year in succession that he had won the event, and the second year in a row that his margin of victory was six shots.
It would be the first of three senior major championships that Stricker would win in 2023, with victories at the Senior PGA Championship and Kaulig Companies Championship to follow.
What is the history around the Regions Tradition?
The event dates back to 1989, and over its 35-year history, the Regions Tradition has been played in three states, and at three different times of the year.
The Golf Club at Desert Mountain was the first host of the tournament, and played host to the Regions Tradition until the start of the 21st Century. Superstition Mountain also hosted the event in 2002 before the tournament moved west.
The Reserve Vineyards Golf Course and the Crosswater Club were the two hosts over the next eight years, before the event moved to Alabama from 2011 onward.
Regions Financial Corporation took over the sponsorship of the tournament – hence the name Regions Tradition – ahead of the 2011 tournament, which saw the event move to Birmingham, Alabama.
Shoal Creek hosted the event for five years, before Greystone Golf & Country Club – the current venue for the tournament – took over in 2016.
After being played in April during its time at Desert Mountain, the Regions Tradition was then played in August in Oregon. After moving to Alabama, the event has take a slot in May, and remains as the first men’s senior major championship of the year.
Six men have won the Regions Tradition on multiple occasions. The great Jack Nicklaus won the tournament four times, with defending champion Steve Stricker having won it three times.
Gil Morgan, Fred Funk, Tom Lehman and Bernhard Langer have all been victorious at the Regions Tradition twice during the event’s history.
Who is in the field for the first senior major of the year at Greystone?
Unsurprisingly, some of the biggest names in senior golf will be teeing it up at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
Germany’s Bernhard Langer – who holds the record for the most senior major championships (12) – will continue his return from an Achilles injury. Former Ryder Cup teammates Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez will also feature in Alabama.
Steve Stricker will be aiming for a three-peat after wins at the Regions Tradition in both 2022 and 2023. If he was to win, he would join Nicklaus as the only four-time winners of the season’s first major championship.
The likes of Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Tom Lehman and John Daly will all be playing this week, aiming to add to their major championship collections.
