Despite the impressive overall record, these are not glorious times to be a New York Yankees fan, as the team is mired in a vicious slump.

The Yanks were just swept by the Cincinnati Reds, and they displayed an embarrassing lack of hustle in the series finale on Thursday.

The Reds jumped out to a 5-0 lead and would ultimately win 8-4 to brush New York aside.

In the top of the ninth, Cincinnati’s Jeimer Candelario blooped a soft hit into centerfield for a single in front of Trent Grisham.

But Grisham appeared in no hurry to scoop up the baseball and then carelessly fumbled it as he readied himself to toss it back into the infield.

Candelario used this opportunity to hustle his way to second base.

Yankees insider Bryan Hoch reported that New York manager Aaron Boone told Grisham his lackadaisical handling of the baseball in centerfield “was a bad look.”

The skipper reminded Grisham that one of the reasons he is a Gold Glover is “the ease with which he plays his position.”

Needless to say, the Bronx faithful sent a chorus of boos onto the field over the error, which seemed to symbolize the recent run for the Yankees.

The loss put New York at 54-35, still a sterling record but far off the pace set earlier in the season.

After Thursday’s defeat, the Bronx Bombers fell to 5-14 in their previous 19 games and have scored only 91 runs in the current slide.

This is a far cry from the season’s first two months when the team looked virtually unbeatable.
