Acapulco: Cobolli Emerges as Top Contender for Title

Flavio Cobolli has emerged as the leading contender for the title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, following a dramatic series of upsets that saw the top four seeds ousted in the early rounds. The Italian, ranked fifth, showcased his talents by defeating China’s Wu Yibing in a one-sided match that saw Cobolli take the first set after a tense tiebreak before dominating the second for a score of 7-6(4), 6-1.

In this quarterfinal clash, Cobolli demonstrated remarkable resilience, successfully saving all eight break points he faced, six of which came during the second set. Despite being under pressure, he exhibited a calm demeanor, particularly as he recovered from a challenging 15-40 position in his final three games. The match, which lasted one hour and 35 minutes, highlighted his determination and improvement in mindset.

“I think when you don’t play like you want, but you still stay positive in your mindset, that’s great for me because it’s never happened in the past,” Cobolli said, reflecting on his growth as a player. He praised his opponent’s skills, acknowledging Wu’s effort in claiming the first set, while asserting his own aggressive play in the second.

Cobolli’s next challenge will be Miomir Kecmanovic, who has been in formidable form, recently eliminating top seed Alexander Zverev before dispatching French player Terence Atmane with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-3.

Furthermore, Frances Tiafoe assured his place in the semifinals by overcoming Italian Mattia Bellucci in their quarterfinal match, clinching victory on his third match point with a score of 6-3, 6-4. This marks Tiafoe’s first semifinal appearance in Acapulco after eight attempts, and he aims to secure his fourth tour-level title, with aspirations for a win at this 500-category event.

Tiafoe is set to clash with fellow American Brandon Nakashima, who advanced after defeating the sixth-seeded Valentin Vacherot in a hard-fought match that ended 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

As the tournament progresses, Cobolli, Tiafoe, Kecmanovic, and Nakashima are poised to deliver thrilling semi-final encounters that will determine who moves forward in pursuit of the coveted crown in Acapulco.
