Acapulco | De Minaur retains title.

Acapulco | De Minaur retains title.

Alex de Minaur successfully defended his Acapulco title and is the first player to remain unbeaten in successive Mexican Open tournaments since David Ferrer completed his hattrick over three years (2010-2012). More significantly perhaps, he is the first player to successfully retain his title since the event switched to hardcourts in 2014.

Acapulco has been a very good place to me for my tennis career, The first time I won a 500, and 1709476433 the first time I’ve defended a title in my career. I feel at home here and it’s a great place to be Alex de Minaur

It was also the Australian’s his first title of the season and the eighth of his career and just reward for his excellent start to the season which also saw him reach the final of the Rotterdam.

Casper Ruud has had an equally exciting start to 2024 reaching the Los Cabos final last week and now the ATP 500 event in Acapulco but has yet to collect the 11th title of his career.

The third-seeded Australian defeated the 6th seeded Norwegian won 6-4 6-4, converted three of four break points, wrapping up a comfortable victory after one-hour, 57-minutes

“It’s been an amazing week,” De Minaur, now 15-4 for the season, said in his post-match interview. “Probably a week I didn’t really expect if I’m honest. I came into Mexico not feeling my best and just kept on telling myself to keep giving myself chances. I think today I played my best match of the tournament, so I’m extremely happy with that.”

“Acapulco has been a very good place to me for my tennis career,” De Minaur added. “The first time I won a 500, and 1709476433 the first time I’ve defended a title in my career. I feel at home here and it’s a great place to be.”

With his title run, De Minaur ensured he will on Monday remain in the Top 10 of the world rankings at 10 but Ruud will remain ahead of him at 9.

“Fantastic playing all week, too good tonight, too good every night,” Ruud said of De Minaur during the trophy presentation. “It seems like you are playing in Acapulco quite well and I guess you will come back next year” adding with a smile: “I hope not, but I’m sure you will!”
