Adelaide: Vukic Pulls off Upset Against Tsitsipas

The opening rounds of tennis tournaments can often throw up unexpected results, and the Adelaide International was no exception. Stefanos Tsitsipas, the seventh seed and a player with considerable recent momentum from his performances in the United Cup, faced a daunting challenge against Australian qualifier Aleksander Vukic. In a tightly contested match that lasted just under two hours, Vukic emerged victorious, clinching victory with a scoreline of 7-6(3), 7-6(5).

Despite some solid starts to the season, Tsitsipas was unable to convert opportunities. Vukic’s performance was bolstered by the enthusiastic support of the local crowd. “I appreciate the support, everyone helping me out tonight. It was an awesome win for me,” Vukic commented, clearly moved by the atmosphere at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre.

In terms of pressure moments, Vukic demonstrated remarkable composure, saving four break points during the match and rallying from 1-3 down in the second set tie break to take the final eight points and seal his progress to the second round, where he will face Italian Andrea Vavassori. Vavassori also succeeded in his first-round match, overcoming Gabriel Diallo of Canada with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4).

Further down the draw, the eighth seed Tomas Machac advanced confidently, defeating Australian wildcard James Duckworth 6-3, 6-3. Machac will now meet Quentin Halys, another qualifier who took out British player Jacob Fearnley with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4.

In an all-Australian showdown, Rinky Hijikata won a hard-fought battle against Tristan Schoolkate, with a score of 6-4, 6-4, setting up a second-round clash against top seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

One of the most heartwarming stories from the day was the return of Thanasi Kokkinakis, who marked his comeback after a year-long injury layoff due to pectoral muscle surgery. In an emotional match, he defeated Sebastian Korda 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). Though he experienced some shoulder discomfort and required medical assistance, Kokkinakis expressed his joy, saying, “It’s been a rough 12 months, but this makes it all worth it. Thank you so much, I love it here.” Up next for him is fifth seed Valentin Vacherot, who edged past Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(5), 6-4.

Ugo Humbert, hoping to regain form after a disappointing early exit in Brisbane, also found success in Adelaide, winning against fellow Frenchman Terence Atmane with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3). Humbert will next meet fourth seed Tallon Griekspoor.

Further, Reilly Opelka showcased his powerful serving, hitting 22 aces to claim victory against local favorite Alexei Popyrin with a score of 6-3, 7-6(6). Opelka will face his good friend and second seed Tommy Paul, while Jaume Munar’s impressive turnaround saw him defeat Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-0 after losing the first three games.

As the tournament progresses, the early rounds have already hinted at the excitement and unpredictability that make tennis so captivating.
