Adrien Rabiot has reportedly been offered to La Liga giants Barcelona amidst interest in him from Manchester United.
Rabiot has been linked with Manchester United plenty of times over the past few years but needless to say, an Old Trafford move for him has never materialised.
He particularly came close to joining United in the summer of 2022 after the club struck an agreement over his transfer fee with Juventus. Former chief John Murtough even travelled to Turin to seal the deal but Rabiot’s mother and agent Veronique ended up asking for crazy wages for her son. As a result, United pulled out of the race for the Frenchman.
Rabiot is now a free agent following the expiry of his Juventus contract and it appears he is once again on United’s radar.
The player had been in an identical position last summer, only to surprisingly sign a new one-year contract to stay with the Old Lady, even without European football.
Now the situation is repeating itself, but this time Juventus seem less inclined to accept his outrageous wage demands. A complete parting of ways therefore seems to be the most likely outcome.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Rabiot is United’s “priority target” to bolster their options in the middle of the park.
In addition to the Red Devils, the 29-year-old has also been linked to Real Madrid.
According to Calciomercato, Rabiot “dreams” of joining Madrid and becoming the latest addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s side. This stance from the midfielder comes after Juventus said “no” to his salary demand of €9m net per season. The Serie A outfit are offering him €7m plus €1m in bonuses per season.
It’s understood that AC Milan conducted an “exploratory survey” for Rabiot but they quickly opted against progressing any further once they found out the amount of money he wanted.
Calciomercato add that Newcastle and Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the France international.
Meanwhile, Fichajes relay that Barcelona have been presented with the chance to secure the United target’s signature ahead of all other interested parties.
Fichajes reveal, “The mother and agent of the player, who has just finished his contract with Juventus, has approached Rabiot to the Catalan club in search of a new opportunity for his career.”
“The possibility of signing Rabiot on a no-transfer fee basis has emerged as a tempting opportunity.”
“However, the Frenchman’s salary demands, which amount to €8 million per year, complicate the operation. Juventus are still interested in keeping the player, and Barca are unlikely to be willing to meet these salary demands, especially when Rabiot is not an absolute priority for the club.”
Clarity on Rabiot’s future is likely to be provided after France’s participation in Euro 2024 comes to an end.
Les Bleus are poised to face Portugal in the quarter-final of the competition on Friday at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.
