What many casual fans of the NFL might not realize is that the New England Patriots currently are without a general manager.
Director of Scouting Eliot Wolf has been the de facto GM ever since the team parted ways with legendary head coach and GM Bill Belichick earlier this offseason.
Now, after the NFL Draft took place a few weeks ago, the team is ready to find their next general manager.
According to CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones, New England’s search for a new GM has begun.
The #Patriots search for a general manager or in other words the “top football executive” in the front office has officially begun, per @jjones9.
It is unknown the official title the role will have, but sources tell Jones that it will “outrank all other football positions.” pic.twitter.com/uviKNkByat

Once they find their top candidate, the role that he or she will take on will “outrank all other football positions.”
The Pats promoted former Super Bowl champ and linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to take over for Belichick earlier this offseason.
But with the loss of Belichick, that means the team lost it’s GM too.
It appears as though the Pats may very well be going back to the traditional style of operating an NFL team.
They have owner Robert Kraft, they are searching for their next GM, and they have Mayo as the head coach.
That is certainly a new way of doing things in New England, especially after Belichick did almost everything while in Foxboro.
Regardless of who the Patriots roll with at GM, this is a rebuilding franchise heading into 2024.
They selected North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3 overall in the NFL Draft and will be moving forward with him as the centerpiece of the franchise, especially on offense.
