Barcelona Dominates Bayern Munich with 7-1 Victory
Barcelona showcased an impressive performance on Tuesday, defeating Bayern Munich 7-1 at Estadi Johan Cruyff during the UEFA Women’s Champions League, sending a strong message to their competitors.
It took only four minutes for Alexia Putellas to find the net with a stunning strike, setting the tone for the match. Goals from Ewa Pajor and Clàudia Pina, both of whom scored twice, complemented strikes from Esmee Brugts and Salma Paralluelo. This resounding victory provided a chance for Barcelona to redeem themselves after last season’s final loss to Arsenal.
Bayern managed to briefly reduce the deficit when Klara Bühl scored, making it 3-1, and Lea Schürrer had a goal disallowed that could have made it 4-2. However, overall, it was a night to forget for the German side, as the scoreline reflected Barcelona’s dominance.
Bayern’s coach, José Barcala, expressed disappointment, noting that his team struggled to cope with Barcelona’s pace and style of play. Despite being seen as favorites, few anticipated such a lopsided result against last season’s quarterfinalists, particularly following Arsenal’s unexpected victory over Barcelona in Lisbon.
Barcelona defender Irene Paredes emphasized the team’s determination to come back stronger this season after last year’s heartbreak. They started aggressively against Bayern, almost taking the lead within two minutes. Aitana Bonmatí created early chances but was thwarted by Bayern’s Franziska Kett who deflected a potential goal-scoring effort for a corner. Just two minutes later, Putellas scored from the edge of the box.
Despite a remarkable save from Bayern’s Ena Mahmutovic, who denied Bonmatí, Pajor managed to score from a rebound after Paredes hit the bar. This extraordinary display by Barcelona challenged ongoing concerns regarding their squad depth due to recent departures.
While they may have shrunk their roster, Barcelona’s young talents, such as Brugts, who scored on the night, are ready to step up. This tactical shift allowed Brugts, typically a left-back, to operate almost as an attacking midfielder, creating confusion for Bayern’s defense.
Bayern briefly threatened with Bühl’s goal initiated by Arianna Caruso, but Paralluelo quickly restored Barcelona’s lead before halftime. The second half was mostly a formality as Pajor scored again, followed by Pina’s contributions, rounding off a spectacular night with two goals.
Barcelona may not have the largest squad, but they possess a wealth of talent, capable of competing against top-tier teams like OL Lyonnes, Chelsea, and Arsenal later in the competition. They aimed to assert their status as strong contenders in this new league format, similar to the men’s competition.
Barcala remarked on the challenge his team faces, acknowledging Barcelona’s elite status among the tournament’s favorites. The narrative is clear: Barcelona is back with a vengeance as they kick off their campaign this season.
