Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted that Brentford’s Ivan Toney would be a good option to be the Magpies’ main source of goals next season as the striker is expected to leave the Bees.
The 27-year-old recently returned from his eight-month ban which he received for breaking gambling regulations, but it hasn’t taken him long to get back up to speed as the Brentford star has scored three goals across four games.
This comes off of the back of a sensational 2022/23 campaign for Toney which has attracted him attention from clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea. Both London teams are in need of a striker but Alan Shearer would love to see the 27-year-old at St. James’ Park.
With Callum Wilson approaching the final 12 months of his contract and linked with a summer exit in recent weeks, the club are likely to sign another forward ahead of the 2024/25 season.
According to the Independent, Toney is expected to be valued at £60m up front and perhaps as much as £80m including add-ons.
Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “I think he’s a really good player and I think he’s a really good option.
“Newcastle need to improve in that department, they need another option in there, so I don’t think there will be any shortage of suitors for Toney.”
