After the eight Davis Cup quarterfinalists were determined this past weekend, team competition continues this week with the Laver Cup.

It will be the seventh iteration of the event dating back to its inception in 2017 (2020 was missed due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The 2024 festivities will take place September 20-22 at Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany.

Team Europe has lost twice in a row since winning the first four Laver Cups. This year’s European lineup–captained by Bjorn Borg–features Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Rafael Nadal, who famously played doubles with Roger Federer in the Swiss’ last match in 2022, announced his withdrawal a few days ago.

“This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win,” Nadal explained. “I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as Captain. I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”

Dimitrov replaced Nadal on the six-man squad.

Team World is trying to extend its winning streak to three. Captain John McEnroe’s roster consists of Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, Alejandro Tabilo, Francisco Cerundolo, and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
