Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are currently two of the biggest rivals on the ATP Tour, but they also have a lot of respect for each other.
In 2023, there were no other players that would be more dominant than Djokovic and Alcaraz. They won all four Grand Slam titles, with the Spaniard winning Wimbledon, while his opponent won the remaining three.
It’s not a surprise that the two were among the most searched athletes in the world, and their rivalry really kept tennis fans on their toes throughout the 2023 season.
But while one is only starting his career, another is competing already for two decades, and for Djokovic, having young players is something that motivates him.
The Serbian said that the likes of Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune, make him hungry and that’s something that motivates him to keep working an winning as a result.
Recently, the Serbian spoke to Jon Wertheim on CBS News in an interview called 60 Minutes. Discussing many different topics, Djokovic spoke also about his main rival.
Alcaraz, according to the 24-time Grand Slam champion, is a “complete player” but he sees his own motivation in the Spaniard’s qualities and success.
Djokovic says that how good Alcaraz is motivates him to “reinvent” himself and become even better, something that he successfully did multiple times on his journey towards 24 major titles.
“He’s as complete of a player as I have seen in ages. It’s a great opportunity for me to reinvent myself and really push harder than I ever did.”
Djokovic will get that opportunity to reinvent himself once again at the 2024 Australian Open, which starts on January 14th. Once again, he’ll be the first seed at the tournament, in an attempt to win his 11th title in Melbourne. On the other side of the draw, Carlos Alcaraz will await for a possible final showdown.
