As the new ATP season approaches, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are ahead of the pack according to the former Roger Federer coach, Paul Annacone.
The 2024 season is slowly approaching, and predictions are starting to roll in. After all, we’re about a month away from the first Grand Slam of the year and there won’t be a lot of time for players to get things right once they start playing.
Neither Djokovic nor Alcaraz needs too much time as they proved this year how quickly they can flip the switch. Alcaraz’s sudden rise on grass was spectacular to see, and it was straight out of Djokovic’s playbook.
Those two are the players your mind goes to when you think about Grand Slams. Novak Djokovic won three out of four last year and has been dominant in Australia over the years.
Carlos Alcaraz can also be dangerous down under, and according to Paul Annacone, they’ve proven to be ahead of the rest in the past year.
“In my personal opinion right now over the 12 months span, I think Novak and [Carlos] are a little better than everybody. Little better, not a lot.”
Some might say they’ve been clearly better than the rest, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter because they still won’t win every event. There are plenty of capable tennis players to step up, but as Annacone explained in the Rock n Roll Tennis Podcast, they are certainly the most likely to do well at the majors.
“Does that mean they are going to win every single tournament? No. But I would lean towards them in the Majors – in three out of five sets.”
Asked to pick a name out of the rest of the players, Annacone singled out Danil Medvedev as the most likely one, as he was closest to the two over the past 12 months.
