Carlos Alcaraz was asked about Emma Raducanu‘s mixed doubles controversy at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, and he shared his honest opinion.
The British player was on top of the world a few days ago, but things went south for her in a matter of a few hours. She was playing really well and made her way to the second week of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
She also signed up to send off Andy Murray from Wimbledon with a fascinating mixed doubles match. However, she withdrew from that mixed doubles match, effectively ending Murray’s Wimbledon career, and it left many fans disappointed.
Raducanu withdrew from the match due to wrist soreness, which is a good enough reason to withdraw, especially as she already had an operation on that wrist.
Subsequently, in her singles match, which likely contributed to her withdrawal, she failed to make the quarter-final, losing to a player ranked outside of the Top 100.
After his win at SW19, Alcaraz was asked to comment on Raducanu’s controversial mixed doubles withdrawal, which even got a comment from Murray’s mom, Judy.
“It’s a difficult situation. She said she was going to play mixed doubles with Andy in the last Wimbledon of his career… I’m sure she didn’t want to pull out of the mixed doubles. She had her reasons to do it. I guess physical problems.”
The Spanish player saw it as a difficult situation, with it being Murray’s last Wimbledon, but he was sure that Raducanu didn’t want to withdraw. Sometimes, athletes just have to do something they don’t want to do, and in this instance, Raducanu had to prioritize her own career.
“I don’t know, she’s facing the fourth round of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon, I think it’s special for her playing in England. I’m sure a lot of players in her position would do the same thing as her. Obviously, knowing it’s his last Wimbledon is difficult to deal with.”
