Carlos Alcaraz will retain his spot in the top three of the ATP rankings after advancing into his second Wimbledon final.
For the second year in a row, Alcaraz will face seven-time champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court on the final Sunday of the Championships. The Spaniard recovered from losing the opening set in his semifinal to beat fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in four sets.
Djokovic, meanwhile, played clutch tennis to beat the in-form Lorenzo Musetti in the second semifinal. The Serb was assured of retaining his spot as World No. 2 after that victory, although he can take his points tally to 9130 if he wins the tournament and bridge the gap to Jannik Sinner’s total of 9570.
Alcaraz was in danger of dropping outside the top four at the start of the tournament after an uncertain build-up to this year’s Wimbledon. He was beaten in the second round of the Cinch Championships at Queen’s by Jack Draper.
He was the defending champion there, which meant he lost some valuable ranking points. This consequently affected his ranking and subsequent seeding at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old dropped to the third spot, allowing Djokovic to overtake him.
And because he was defending the full 2000 points for winning last year’s Wimbledon, he could have fallen as low as fifth if he had crashed out of the tournament before the second week. It would have been his lowest position since 2022.
Thankfully for him, that never happened, and Alcaraz won a key clash against World No. 5 Medvedev to take his points tally in the live rankings to 7430. Alexander Zverev, who currently sits in fourth place, needed the Spaniard to tumble so that he could rise to third.
As stated at the top of the article, Djokovic has cemented the second spot after the tournament regardless of Sunday’s result. However, if he wins his second Wimbledon title, Alcaraz can retain his score of 8130 points, which he had owned before the event began two weeks ago.
