Alcaraz leads Team Europe to dramatic comeback victory in Laver Cup

Alcaraz completes Team Europe comeback to win Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz

Team Europe emerged victorious in the Laver Cup after winning three out of four matches on Sunday. Carlos Alcaraz excelled in doubles and secured the victory in singles, leading the Europeans to a comeback win at Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany.

With the scores tied after the first two rubbers on Sunday, Team World needed just one win in the last two singles matches. Frances Tiafoe was on the verge of victory when he led Alexander Zverev 6-4, 4-2. However, Zverev rallied and won 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-5.

It was then up to Alcaraz to seal the victory. The Spanish player, ranked third in the world, remained unbeaten in singles matches and overall for the week by defeating Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 in the final match. Despite conceding a break in the second set, Alcaraz maintained control throughout the match.

“It’s great,” Alcaraz exclaimed. “Obviously we came here with a goal, to win the Laver Cup. We are very, very happy about reaching our goal. We almost lost, but Sascha came with really good tennis and gave me the chance to win.

“It’s always tough to play Team World at the Laver Cup,” European captain Bjorn Borg remarked. “You’ve seen good tennis this week and I thought that we weren’t going to win it, but the guys played great tennis and we came through. For me to spend time with these players in Team Europe, it’s a lot of fun. We have a good team spirit and we gave everything. I’m very proud of my team.”

This marked the final year for captains Borg and John McEnroe. They will be succeeded by Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi next September in San Francisco.
