At this year’s Madrid Open, Carlos Alcaraz has a chance to improve upon two records currently owned by Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz has been a tremendous performer at the Madrid Open so far in his career. He won his first trophy in the Spanish capital in 2022, beating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches to reach the final. He beat Alexander Zverev in the final to lift the trophy.
One year later, Alcaraz repeated that achievement by winning the trophy again. There were some connecting dots as he once again defeated a German in the final, just that time, it was Jan-Lennard Struff.
This year, Alcaraz has played well once more, and he’s only a few matches away from making yet another final. If he does that, he’ll break one record and give himself a chance to break another, both are currently held by Nadal.
The first record can be broken after his next math because right now, Alcaraz is tied with Nadal for the most consecutive wins in Madrid. They’re both at 14 and if the 20-year-old wins his next match, he’ll be the new owner of the most consecutive wins record at the Madrid Open.
The other record is related to winning the trophy. If he does so, he would become the first player to win the event three times in a row. Nadal has played in 3 consecutive finals, but he won two of those, failing to win a third consecutive one.
That’s what gives Alcaraz a chance to become the new owner of the record, which he currently shares with Nadal. They’re both at two consecutive wins, and if he goes all the way, he’ll be alone.
Speaking after his most recent win, Alcaraz seemed quite motivated, taking the energy from the home crowd that has been supporting him.
“I have to say thanks to the people who supported me til the last point. I think they pushed me to not give up and keep fighting. I’m going to say this win is thanks to them as well. It’s incredible to have this crowd behind me.”
