Rivalries are what many consider to be the driving forces of sport. While individuals can do it independently, rivalries make everything much better. Take modern tennis, for example.
We had Roger Federer, and he certainly revitalized his interest in tennis at his peak, but everything changed when Rafael Nadal showed up.
It wasn’t a negative change; it made the sport even more interesting because we had this legendary battle and the privilege to watch it weekly. Then came Novak Djokovic, and then we had a 3-way battle with Andy Murray more often than not, making it even more interesting.
It does drive the sport forward, and it’s why Tim Henman firmly believes that the new rivalries between Alcaraz, Rune, and Sinner are really good for the sport, and he’s hardly the only one.
He’s got amazing all-round game, the versatility, but he’s still so young. He’s another one that just embraces challenges and he loves the competition. He has an element of a rivalry against Djokovic because they’re completely different eras, but also, I think [he’s] almost closer to Sinner and Rune.
Those are three guys that I think are going to play each other an enormous amount in the biggest and best tournaments. And that’s so important for our sport. We love those rivalries.
Alcaraz’s rivalry with Djokovic has already written some very exciting chapters, and it’s still the most interesting rivalry in the sport. With that, the Serbian will retire sooner rather than later, and then these players will take over.
With the way their career’s have been trending it promises to be a really exciting time in the sport where several players will content weekly for trophies, just like the golden era of tennis.
