Alcaraz’s Struggles, Djokovic’s Mediocrity, and the Ultimate Champion

During the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, players made frequent use of their option to challenge line umpire calls, with varying degrees of success. The human line judges will soon be replaced by live electronic line calling starting in 2025. At this year’s Wimbledon, players challenged a total of 1,020 calls in the Gentlemen’s Singles and 512 in the Ladies’ Singles, with an overall success rate of 25%.

Some players had more success than others when challenging calls. Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev were the two players with the most challenges, each challenging 27 calls. Medvedev had a success rate of 26%, while Alcaraz only had a 7% success rate, proving that umpiring may not be his calling. Jack Draper challenged 14 calls in his matches but was not successful even once.

On the other hand, some players excelled at challenging calls. Novak Djokovic had a relatively average success rate, while Alexander Zverev had a 31% success rate. Frances Tiafoe was successful in challenging calls 38% of the time, and Alex de Minaur had a 58% success rate.

In the Ladies’ Singles, players like Ajla Tomljanovic, Shuai Zhang, and Barbora Krejcikova had a 100% success rate when challenging calls. However, players like Jelena Ostapenko only had a 10% success rate. Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Emma Raducanu, and Elena Rybakina all had success rates above the tournament’s average.

Overall, some players were successful in challenging calls, while others struggled to overturn the umpire’s decisions. The full overview of challenges made in singles can be seen below:
