Alex Eala Advances to Quarterfinals of Dubai Tennis Championships

Alex Eala’s impressive journey through the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships continued on Wednesday, as she secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a well-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sorana Cîrstea, who is currently ranked No. 32 in the world. This marks Eala’s second appearance in the final eight of a WTA 1000 event, having previously reached this stage at last year’s Miami Open. It also serves as a form of redemption for Eala, who had faced defeat against the experienced Romanian at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open.

The match showcased a series of fluctuations in serving consistency, particularly during the opening set. Both athletes had their share of difficulties, but securing breaks proved to be a challenge. Eala struck first with an early break in the third game, only for Cîrstea to immediately respond and level the match at 2-2.

Following the initial exchanges, the set evolved into a pattern of steady service holds, characterized by intense baseline rallies. The players engaged in 14 games before Eala applied renewed pressure in the 11th game, breaking Cîrstea again, thanks to her aggressive returns. Serving for the set, Eala maintained her composure and successfully closed it out in the subsequent game, clinching the first set.

A key factor in the opening frame was the disparity in unforced errors, with Cîrstea accumulating 30 compared to Eala’s 19, highlighting Eala’s more disciplined approach.

With confidence on her side, Eala stormed into the second set, quickly establishing a 4-0 lead courtesy of two breaks of Cîrstea’s serve. Her aggressive returns put the Romanian on the back foot, and Cîrstea struggled to maintain her rhythm during prolonged exchanges.

However, Cîrstea briefly regained her footing, managing to hold serve in the fifth game and creating two break-point opportunities in the sixth. Nevertheless, Eala’s first serve proved too strong, allowing her to extend her lead to 5-1.

Refusing to give in, Cîrstea fought back by breaking Eala in the seventh game and stringing together three consecutive games, narrowing the score to 5-4. As the situation became more tense, Eala responded effectively, showcasing her serving skills and baseline control to solidify her victory.

Eala’s next challenge looms large in the form of a quarterfinal showdown against American star Coco Gauff, ranked No. 4 in the world. This matchup is eagerly anticipated, particularly as the two had previously partnered in doubles at the 2025 Italian Open.
