Scouting for NFL-caliber talent has changed significantly throughout the years.
The internet and social media have done a lot to change this process, as coaches and scouts have access to more information than ever before.
At any given time, they can pull up hours of tape, and find out everything they want about a given player.
Even with all of this in mind, teams can still make mistakes in the recruiting process.
Fans have seen this play out every year in the NFL Draft, where teams end up reaching for a particular player, passing on a potential superstar.
After seeing how things have played out to this point in his career, it is obvious that several teams missed on Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 draft.
He was the 10th overall player taken, and while this might have been a miss by the other nine teams, it has recently been revealed that the Kansas City Chiefs were in on him the entire time.
Alex Smith recently spoke with Adam Schefter, where he indicated that Mahomes was on the Chiefs’ radar after his freshman year.
“He was in love with Patrick after his freshman year,” Smith said about Chiefs GM Brett Veach.
Chiefs’ GM Brett Veach and HC Andy Reid had former Texas Tech standout Patrick Mahomes on their radar long before most people realized, per former KC QB and now ESPN analyst Alex Smith.

Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front office saw something in him early on in his collegiate career, and they knew they needed to pursue him.
Mahomes, in many people’s eyes, is the best quarterback in the NFL, and the Chiefs were able to get him with the No. 10 pick.
Scouting can pay off in a big way, especially since a team like the Chicago Bears took Mitchell Trubisky with the No. 2 pick, which wasn’t the yield they hoped it would be.
