In a significant development for men’s tennis, Alexander Zverev has officially announced his withdrawal from the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam due to an ankle injury. The 28-year-old German player, who recently fell to Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping five-set semifinal at the Australian Open, expressed disappointment over his decision but emphasized the necessity of prioritizing his health.
Zverev’s ongoing ankle issues have been a cause for concern, leading his physiotherapist to recommend a thorough recovery period before returning to competitive play. “I find it incredibly unfortunate that I have to make this decision,” Zverev stated. “The ABN AMRO Open holds special memories for me as a young player, and I always look forward to returning. However, with my history of ankle problems, it’s crucial that I prioritize my recovery and avoid any risks. I wish everyone in Rotterdam a wonderful week ahead.”
This development has resulted in a shake-up within the tournament, elevating Alex de Minaur to the status of top seed. The Australian, currently ranked sixth in the world, is poised to make a strong bid for the title after reaching the finals of the Rotterdam Open in the past two years. De Minaur will face tough competition from notable players including Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked eighth, Alexander Bublik at tenth, Daniil Medvedev at eleventh, and Jack Draper, who is ranked thirteenth.
Tournament director Richard Krajicek commented on Zverev’s decision, stating, “Given his history, we would naturally have liked to see Alexander back on the court, but we also understand his choice. Everyone still remembers the images and the impact of his previous ankle injury.”
With Zverev’s exit, Jesper de Jong, who was initially the first reserve in the entry list, is now positioned to enter the tournament directly thanks to his ranking. Meanwhile, the wildcard that was previously allocated to De Jong has been reassigned to Botic van de Zandschulp.
As the tournament approaches, anticipation builds around the remaining competitors and the quest for the prestigious title in Rotterdam, now with a new dynamic caused by Zverev’s absence.
