Injury Blow for Liverpool as Alisson Becker is Ruled Out
Liverpool’s Champions League match against Galatasaray has been hit by the news that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will not participate due to injury.
The Brazilian goalkeeper stayed behind in Merseyside after experiencing discomfort during a training session on Monday, resulting in his absence from the squad that traveled to Istanbul for the round-of-16 first-leg match.
According to Paul Joyce from The Times, the injury surfaced after the team’s last training before their departure.
Joyce reported, “Alisson will miss Liverpool’s Champions League game with Galatasaray after expressing discomfort following Monday’s training session.”
Although the medical staff considers the issue minor, they opted to leave the 33-year-old back home, demonstrating a careful approach toward his health.
This situation presents a considerable challenge for manager Arne Slot, as Alisson’s performances in critical European away matches have often been pivotal for Liverpool.
Giorgi Mamardashvili Set to Replace Alisson
The report indicates that Alisson will not make the trip to Istanbul, and Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to take his place in goal.
The 25-year-old Georgian international, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2025, is poised to make his first appearance since the FA Cup match against Barnsley two months prior.
Mamardashvili has already experienced the atmosphere at RAMS Park, having come on as a substitute for Alisson during Liverpool’s 1–0 loss there in September.
With 11 appearances to his name this season, he will need to ensure solid defensive performance to help Liverpool secure a favorable outcome before the return leg at Anfield.
Alisson’s Injury Concerns Continues
This latest injury marks a continued setback for Alisson, who is unfortunately becoming known for his frequent absences.
Despite being recognized as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, his availability has been a recurring worry for the team.
This season alone, he has missed nine matches across all competitions, suffering a lengthy absence in late 2025 due to a hamstring issue.
Since 2019, Alisson has dealt with several injuries affecting his muscles, hips, and calves, forcing Liverpool to depend on their backup goalkeepers more frequently.
While the acquisition of Mamardashvili was aimed at securing the position for the future, the reliance on backup options has raised questions regarding Alisson’s long-term future with the club.
