Amanda Anisimova vs Alize Cornet: 2024 Charleston Open

Amanda Anisimova vs Alize Cornet: 2024 Charleston Open

After missing some time, Amanda Anisimova will be back on the courts at the 2024 Charleston Open, taking on Alize Cornet in the opening round.

Anisimova returned to tennis earlier this year but found herself away from it again following the Australian Open. It wasn’t due to another break but rather an injury that needed some time to be taken care of.

She’s going to be back this upcoming week, choosing the packed Charleston WTA 500 event as the place to do so. She got a pretty decent draw because she didn’t draw any of the high-seeded players, but Alize Cornet, who, in fairness, is a tricky player but also not a player that should trouble the American too much.

Anisimova has been good in Charleston in the past, making the semi-final back in 2022, and the courts play quicker than regular clay courts, which should suit her as well.

Head-to-head:

They played twice in the past, and each player has one win. One of those matches was played back in 2019, while the other happened in 2021. It’s difficult to really conclude anything from that because Anisimova has played well on her comeback, while the Frenchwoman lost six consecutive matches.

The matchup should favor Anisimova as long as she plays as well as she can. The court in Charleston is a quicker clay court, so the better hitter generally does better.

Prediction:

One thing that Cornet could use against Anisimoa is her own consistency from the baseline, which can be tough to overcome. The 22-year-old will have to hit through her opponent but she has days when she’s not very consistent with that.

If such a day occurs, then she could lose. I don’t think she will have many problems, though, as I expect her to win in two sets.

Prediction: Amanda Anisimova to win in two sets.
