Amorim Anticipates Player Departures in January

MANCHESTER, England — Ruben Amorim has expressed his expectation that certain players at Manchester United, who have not been receiving regular playing time, may seek to leave the club during the January transfer window as the World Cup approaches.

This season, both Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have seen limited action at Old Trafford, raising concerns about their chances of making the squad for next summer’s tournament with England and the Netherlands, respectively.

Amorim noted, “A lot of things can happen,” when asked about the possibility of transfers in January. He emphasized that some players who are not on the pitch could request moves, necessitating careful management on his part.

Manchester United declined a transfer request from Mainoo at the close of the summer transfer window. Amorim is now preparing for the likelihood that both Mainoo and Zirkzee may wish to depart this winter.

The financial commitment from United has been substantial, with approximately £250 million ($328 million) spent on new players since Amorim took the helm a year ago. Historically, the club has preferred to conduct most of its transfer activity during the summer months rather than in January.

While Amorim is focused on long-term recruitment strategies, he has not dismissed the idea of adding to the squad during the winter window. “We want to bring in players who have a promising future with Manchester United,” he stated. “Our goal is not simply to acquire short-term fixes but to identify players who can contribute significantly over time.”

As preparations for the January window begin, Amorim remains optimistic about potential enhancements to the team. “I don’t know what will happen, but of course we are considering ways to improve our squad, and the January window presents that opportunity,” he added.
