Amorim Critiques Manchester United’s Performance Following Everton Defeat
Ruben Amorim expressed that Manchester United remains far from competing at the top of the Premier League standings after suffering a 1-0 defeat against ten-man Everton at Old Trafford on Monday.
The match offered United an opportunity to secure a position in the Champions League spots, but it was Everton who took all three points, even after Idrissa Gueye received a red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane just 13 minutes into the game.
In the aftermath of the loss, Amorim stated that his team “deserved to lose,” acknowledging that despite a recent good run of form, he still harbors fears of a repeat of last season when United finished in 15th place.
“We are not there, not even close to where we need to be to compete for the top spots in the league,” he said. “In the past five weeks, people have praised our progress. I keep reiterating that we are far from where we should be in this club.”
Amorim shared his concerns about reverting to the disappointing feelings of the previous season. “That is my greatest worry,” he admitted.
<pHis frustration with the players was evident when he mentioned being envious of Everton's determination, even if it resulted in Gueye's expulsion.
He expressed the need for his squad to demonstrate similar fighting spirit during training at Carrington on Tuesday. “Fighting is not a negative trait,” Amorim pointed out. “It reflects a desire to reclaim possession and prevent conceding goals. That’s the attitude I want to see.”
He added, “I hope my players will exhibit that same tenacity when they lose the ball. It’s an indication of passion, not a bad thing. There have been games where we’ve shown we can do this. Unfortunately, today we fell short. We expect to improve from this frustration.”
Looking ahead, United currently sits in 10th place in the Premier League and will face Crystal Palace away on November 30.
