South Korea’s Amy Yang claimed her first major title at the 75th attempt by winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Leading by two shots going into the final round at Sahalee Country Club in Seattle, the 34-year-old was ahead by seven strokes after 15 holes.
Despite a bogey at the 16th and a double bogey at the 17th, Yang finished on seven under with a level-par 72, three strokes clear of Jin Young Ko, Lilia Vu, and Miyu Yamashita.
“I’m lost for words right now,” said Yang, who had previously finished as runner-up at the US Women’s Open in 2012 and 2015. “I started doubting myself if I was ever going to win a major before I retire and I’m so grateful and very, very happy to win one. All four rounds were tough out there, but I just trusted what I prepared and I did my best all week.”
Yang began her final round strong with a birdie at the first and added two more before the turn. Despite a bogey at the 10th, birdies at the 11th and 13th helped her secure the victory.
Sweden’s Linn Grant finished in tied 9th as the highest-placed European, while Charley Hull tied for 16th after a disappointing closing 74.
Only 15 players ended the week under par, with world no.1 Nelly Korda missing the cut by one shot after a second round 81 following an opening three-under 69.
