It’s finally here! The 2024 Copa América kicks off tonight, and 16 teams will set off with dreams of lifting the trophy in Miami on July 14th. Copa América is one of the best tournaments in the world, and it all begins with the defending tournament and World Cup champions.
Argentina will face Canada in the opener, Argentina earning the right from being the 2021 Copa América champions. Of course, they are also the reigning World Cup champions, and they enter the tournament as the prohibitive favorites. Led by Lionel Messi, they’re hoping to get started by showing they’re still the number one team in the world.
Canada enters this tournament looking to get back to the things they did well during 2022 World Cup qualifying. Recently, they’ve had to endure a federation that has been in financial turmoil, John Herdman leaving the team suddenly to coach Toronto FC last summer and hiring Jesse Marsch last month to lead the squad. They have arguably the best player in Concacaf in Alphonso Davies, and they have a lot of dangerous attackers. Still, they didn’t have a great lead-up to Copa América, not scoring a goal in a 4-0 loss to the Netherlands and a 0-0 draw to France. They look to overcome that by shocking the defending champions before a packed crowd in Atlanta.
There will be pageantry before the match begins, and hopefully the opening match has a ton of great moments. Let the 2024 Copa América begin!
