By now, everybody knows that San Diego Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller isn’t afraid to make big trades.
In fact, almost his entire rotation is comprised of pitchers who were acquired via trade sometime in the last two or three seasons: Dylan Cease, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Michael King, and Matt Waldron.
After flipping Juan Soto to the New York Yankees during the offseason, it was thought that 2024 would be a transition year for San Diego.
However, they are currently in the thick of things, competing with several other teams for one of the Wild Card spots in the National League and sporting a 32-32 record.
To achieve its objectives, however, the Friars may need an additional starter from the market.
MLB insider Jon Morosi suggest they could look to a recent trade partner to fulfill their current need.
“Could another White Sox flamethrower be headed to San Diego? @jonmorosi highlights the Padres’ potential interest in LHP Garrett Crochet and the existing link between the two clubs following the Dylan Cease trade this offseason,” MLB Network tweeted.

The White Sox and Padres recently worked out the Dylan Cease trade.
The pitcher has been magnificent for San Diego, with a 3.42 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 71 innings.
San Diego needs more arms, though, so they may look towards Crochet.
With significantly more cheap control years, Crochet could be harder to acquire than Cease, though.
He is also younger (he will turn 25 this month) and almost as good, with a 3.49 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 69.2 frames.
Do the Padres have enough impact prospects to get a deal done?
Will they be able to part with them?
The answer to the first question is probably yes, but the second remains to be seen.
