The Denver Broncos swung for the fences to try and get their franchise quarterback.
Trading for Russell Wilson seemed like a game-changing move at the time, but in hindsight, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Wilson will now be benched fro the final two games of the season in an attempt to avoid any injury, as the Broncos would be on the hook for even more money if that were to happen.
With that in mind, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that if Wilson gets cut, he’ll have cost the Broncos a whopping $124 million for two years.
So presuming Russell Wilson is cut, his deal will have cost the Broncos $124 million for two years, when he was already under contract for those years at the time of the trade for $51 million (a $73 million raise).
Add that to all the picks that went to Seattle and … Yikes.

The worst part about that is that he was already under contract for those two years at the time of the trade, and they would’ve paid him just $51 million if they hadn’t given him that massive contract extension.
That’s on top of the plethora of draft picks they sent Seattle, some of which turned out to be star players already.
This could go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history.
The fact that they signed him to that big contract extension without watching him play a single snap with the organization was what truly made this an abysmal move.
Bad trades happen; it’s just a part of the business.
But doubling down on that by blindly signing an aging player to such a big extension was never a good idea, not even if the said player was a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, and they had to learn that the hard way.
