With the New England Patriots parting ways with longtime head coach Bill Belichick after 24 years with the team, the storied franchise is heading into a new era and an uncertain future with new head coach and former player Jerod Mayo at the helm.
Along with bringing in a first-time head coach, the Patriots moved off of starting quarterback Mac Jones, who they traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars recently to backup Trevor Lawrence.
With Jones no longer in the conversation as the team’s starter moving forward, New England had to find a solution at the quarterback position, so they brought back a familiar face in the form of veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett.
Although Brissett isn’t a bad option for a rebuilding team, the Patriots were able to potentially secure their long-term future at the position by drafting Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
With so many changes and so much uncertainty in many different areas, Jason McIntyre of FOX Sports believes there’s no way that Mayo will lead this new-look team to success during the 2024 campaign via The Herd with Colin Cowherd.
“There’s no world where the Patriots and Mayo are successful this year. None,” McIntyre said.
With a first-timer leading the way on the sideline and an unproven rookie quarterback potentially being the starter under center, McIntyre is likely right in his assessment, as they would have to have a season like the Houston Texans did last year with head coach DeMeco Ryans and budding superstar CJ Stroud.
The chances of that happening are slim, but anything can happen in the NFL.
