Andreescu Overwhelmed with Emotion During Speech Following Loss at Libema Open

Andreescu Breaks In Tears During Speech After Missing Out On Libema Open Title

Bianca Andreescu hasn’t won a trophy since 2019, and after failing to do so once more, the Canadian broke down in tears during the trophy ceremony.

When Andreescu won the US Open back in 2019 as a teenager, many anticipated that in the following years, the Canadian would win many more titles, likely even at the major level.

After all, she beat Serena Williams in the final back then, so it was logical to assume that more would be coming her way. Five years later, in 2024, she is yet to lift a trophy again.

She played in the finals, of course, but her career didn’t quite go the way she or anybody else thought it would. Injuries are mostly to blame, but also some bouts of mental health issues, which were only amplified by injuries.

Her most recent comeback is not even a month old, as it happened at Roland Garros, and the 2024 Libema Open was only her second event back. All of that contributed to the whole experience being emotional, and failing to lift a trophy again was devastating for her. She broke down in tears during her speech.

“Thank you to my team. JT, thank you for being there for me. Thank you to my parents. Everyone at home… Sorry guys… my fitness trainer, mental coach, hypnotherapist… it works guys, trust me. Thank you to my friends. My entire family… in Romania as well.”

Despite fighting the tears, she congratulated her opponent, Liudmila Samsonova, who also had a really strong week and finished strongly in the match to win the trophy.

“Definitely not the trophy I wanted. But Liudmila you played amazing tennis throughout the whole season and obviously today. It was meant to be for you. For me I feel like this is a step forward.”

“I’ve been through a lot for quite some time, especially in the last 10 months. This is only my second tournament back. Obviously it’s upsetting. But I know there are good things coming for me.”
