Andreescu Ruled Out Of Australian Open As She Provides Injury Return Timeline

Andreescu Ruled Out Of Australian Open As She Provides Injury Return Timeline

Bianca Andreescu has officially ruled herself out of the 2024 Australian Open and provided an update on when she hopes to return following a back injury.

Andreescu has been sidelined with her injury since August 2023 and has not featured since she lost in the Canadian Open first round to Camila Giorgi. As a result, the former US Open champion missed out on the final Grand Slam of the year and is expected to be out for the foreseeable future.

When speaking at the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Paris media summit, the 23-year-old provided a rough timeline for her recovery. Currently, the Canadian player feels hopeful about getting back to fitness for Spring 2024 and, potentially, featuring in the Sunshine Double.

“No, sadly I won’t be at the Australian Open. Right now I’m looking at (returning) after the Australia Open or the American Tour, so Indian Wells … maybe.”

“Right now, I’m still dealing with my back injury. It is getting better every single day. I’m doing everything I can to get there as fast as possible, but sadly these things take some time. My frustration level has definitely been very high. It’s the bone right? So it takes it takes a lot of time.”

Another 2023 tournament which Andreescu missed out on was the Billie Jean King Cup, which Canada won for the first team after they defeated Italy in the finals.

Having to sit out on the success was a bitter blow for Andreescu and, when looking forward to her chances of making the 2024 Olympics with Canada, she felt positive. But she is equally aware that she will have to make up ground to make the cut.

“I do miss playing and seeing the girls win the Billie Jean Cup too … I really wish I was there. Injuries just suck. Super sad I couldn’t be there because it is also my dream to win that tournament too.”

“I really have to dig deep next year to get my spot but I’ve always wanted to play that tournament so I am hoping that will be enough motivation to win as much as I can.”

“I’m feeling very confident for 2024.”
