Two-time champion Andy Murray will not be able to compete at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after the latest injury setback.
The British player is set to retire after the 2024 season. One of his places for retirement could have been the All England Club, where he won two majors in his tennis career and one Olympic gold medal.
The tournament organizers had plans in place in case the 37-year-old would make a decision to retire at SW19, but that certainly won’t happen, at least this year, as he was ruled out of the 2024 Championships.
It all started at the Cinch Championships at the Queen’s Club. Murray won his first match Alexei Popyrin, which was his 1,000th career match, but in his second match, a disaster followed.
The British legend was forced to retire against Jordan Thompson only after five games of play. Already prior to the match, it seemed clear that the five-time Queen’s Club champion had problems with his movement, and that showed during the match.
Shortly after his retirement, he underwent a procedure to fix the issue, and now, after the injury, The Telegraph reports that Murray will miss six weeks to recover from injury, and as a result, he will also miss the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
The tournament runs from July 1st to 14th, 2024, and it was supposed to be the last Wimbledon that the British legend should have played. Instead, he will now be facing a difficult career decision.
With such long injury recovery, it’s likely that Murray will miss all of the tournaments that he intended to play, as he previously admitted that he didn’t have plans to compete at the US Open.
The six-week period now includes almost all of his possible retirement events, as he will be facing a difficult decision. He’ll either need to retire away from the tennis courts, or push his retirement further.
