Angel Cabrera emerged victorious as the Legends Tour’s match play champion at Hanbury Manor, claiming the Paul Lawrie Match Play title in Hertfordshire.
After a field of 64 players was narrowed down throughout the week, it came down to the final match between two-time Major champion Angel Cabrera and three-time Legends Tour winner James Kingston, the 2022 MCB Road to Mauritius champion.
There was an air of camaraderie at the start, but both players quickly shifted into a focused mindset before teeing off.
Cabrera took an early lead by winning the second hole, but an evenly contested front nine resulted in a tie at the 8th hole.
As the match progressed, Cabrera gained an advantage by winning the 12th hole, only for Kingston to level the score by winning the 14th.
However, Cabrera secured victory by winning the 15th and 16th holes to go two up with two to play.
On the 17th hole, Cabrera’s precise shot from the rough put him in a favorable position, while Kingston’s errant bunker shot led to his conceding the match to Cabrera.
Reflecting on his win, Cabrera expressed his happiness and emotions, having worked hard leading up to the tournament. The victory marked his first professional win since 2013.
In the play-off for third place, Greig Hutcheon defeated Bradley Dredge with a 2&1 victory.
