Angel Gomes, a product of Manchester United’s academy, catches the eye of Newcastle United – Latest on Man United’s News and Transfer Updates

Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes on Newcastle United's radar - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United academy product Angel Gomes has attracted interest from Newcastle United.

Gomes was considered one of the most promising academy prospects during his time at United, where he made his senior debut at 16. However, the excitement and hype steadily faded away as the 5’6” playmaker struggled at senior level. In 2020, the club’s hierarchy made the tough decision to release him.

Gomes eventually landed at Lille and since then, he has grown leaps and bounds, establishing himself as one of the most creative deep-lying midfielders in Ligue 1.

Accordingly, England manager Lee Carsley rewarded the 24-year-old by calling him up for the ongoing international break. Gomes made his debut for the Three Lions against Ireland before starting against Finland on Tuesday.

Gomes showed his impeccable composure in possession, completing an impressive 116 passes in a dominant display.

Now, it seems Premier League clubs are starting to circle around the midfielder.

According to The Sun, Gomes has become Newcastle’s top target and the Magpies could even “ponder a January bid” for the Lille star.

It is claimed a number of clubs followed his performance for England in the Nations League.

Newcastle are not the only club interested in Gomes. The report adds they face competition from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Borussia Dortmund for the ex-United talent.

Further, it is understood Gomes currently has no plans to sign a new contract with Lille, meaning he will be available on a free transfer next summer.

The Red Devils, who are always direct and vertical in possession under Erik ten Hag, could certainly do with a high-volume passer like Gomes to slow things down and control the game more effectively.

However, it remains unclear if the club’s recruitment team is interested in bringing back their former starlet.
