Amanda Anisimova played two great matches in the 2024 Wimbledon Championships qualifying, but she failed in the final one, losing to Eva Lys in three sets.
Anisimova’s ranking didn’t permit the American to enter the main draw of Wimbledon without having to play in the qualifying. She’s very familiar with the event, having played really well at SW19 in the past, but this year, she had to play three matches to get into the main draw.
She did well in all three but failed to win this final one despite being heavily favored. It’s great to see her back in tennis after taking time away from the sport to recharge and focus on her mental health.
She looks very motivated and is playing pretty strong tennis overall. This match was not an easy one, and the start showed that. Lys is a very capable player who plays aggressive tennis and hits the ball really hard.
Both started stable, but Anisimova barely fended off a 0-40 service game. Missing out on those chances made Lys lose her focus a little bit, which allowed the American player to break her serve and take the opening set 6-4.
It was always going to be a match of momentum because both players can be streaky. Lys missed out on her chances, and things immediately swung into Anisimova’s favor, who kept playing well at the start of the second set.
The German stabilized as well, so she didn’t really allow any chances and actually went on to outplay Anisimova in that set. She took a break to win the second 6-3 and force the decider.
She was just hitting the ball better in this set compared to Anisimova, who made too many errors. Lys continued playing well in the final set, taking an early lead, but she couldn’t hold it.
Anisimova broke back, so it was 3-3 after six games. Lys didn’t lose her confidence and simply broke her opponent’s serve once more to take a 5-3 lead. This time around, it proved enough, and she won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
