Anthony Martial and AEK Athens Reach Verbal Agreement for Transfer – Manchester United Transfer Update

Anthony Martial reaches verbal agreement to join AEK Athens - Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Greek side AEK Athens.

The 28-year-old forward spent nine rollercoaster years at Old Trafford, scoring 90 goals in over 300 appearances.

Martial left the club this summer after both he and United decided not to renew his contract during the spring.

Since then, he has been without a club but has been linked to various sides across Europe. Serie A, Ligue 1, and the Turkish Super Lig have all seemed like realistic destinations at one point, but it appeared that he had finally agreed to a deal to join Brazilian side Flamengo. However, that move has reportedly fallen apart due to Martial’s high wage demands.

According to Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto, a verbal agreement has been reached between Martial and AEK Athens over a move.

The Peoples Person had relayed earlier this month that Martial had received an offer that was the biggest the Greek side had ever made in their history.

The exact offer has not been confirmed, but if it is the biggest in their history, this would imply it is larger than the £2.1 million currently being paid to the highest earner, Erik Lamela.

The deal was supposedly contingent on a move for Chelsea’s David Fofana, but since he has now joined Turkish side Goztepe on loan, the path now seems clear for Martial to make the move to the Greek Super League.

The side from the Greek capital currently sit top of the league with ten points from four games.

If this move does come to pass, Martial’s biggest challenge will be to manage to stay fit, as he has been plagued by injury over the last few years of his career. If he can return to playing regularly, he certainly still has the ability to score goals and be a threat in the Greek league.
