Arsenal Leads Race for Anthony Gordon
Mikel Arteta, the head coach of Arsenal, has garnered attention for his side’s interest in Newcastle United’s winger, Anthony Gordon, in light of competition from prominent clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United.
Gordon’s impressive displays for Newcastle, following his transfer from Everton earlier this year, have caught the eye of several top teams. Reports indicate that Arsenal may hold the upper hand in securing the English international’s services.
Since joining Newcastle in January 2023, Gordon has been a key player, contributing significantly to the team and amassing considerable interest from rival clubs.
Gordon’s Impact at Newcastle
This season, despite Newcastle’s challenges, Gordon has excelled with 38 appearances, netting 19 goals (15 goals, four assists) across all competitions. Although he primarily operates as a left winger, he has showcased his versatility by also playing as a striker.
His contract with Newcastle runs until 2029, giving the club a strong negotiating position. Nevertheless, this hasn’t deterred Arsenal, who are reportedly keen to add him to their roster, especially given uncertainties surrounding current players like Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal’s Pursuit Faces Competition
The Gunners are preparing for stiff competition from Manchester United and Liverpool, both of whom have shown interest in Gordon over the past year. However, Arsenal has been long-time admirers and appear to be moving ahead of their rivals.
Arsenal is reportedly considering a transfer fee around £75 million, while Newcastle may seek closer to £95 million for their star player. There are concerns that Manchester United could complicate matters with a potential offer of around £80 million. Meanwhile, Liverpool had expressed interest last summer but it seems Newcastle is reluctant to sell to a direct competitor.
