BOREHAMWOOD, England – In their UEFA Women’s Champions League opener, Arsenal faced a disappointing 2-1 defeat to OL Lyon, highlighted by Melchie Dumornay’s impressive performance. The 22-year-old forward scored both goals, capitalizing on defensive errors from Arsenal, who had hoped to make a strong start after winning the competition last season.
This season, Arsenal has struggled with self-inflicted errors. It was not the tactics employed by Lyon’s new manager, Jonatan Giraldez, or their impressive track record that led to Arsenal’s downfall; the responsibility lies squarely with the Gunners.
Arsenal initially took control of the match, with Alessia Russo netting the opener just seven minutes in, assisted by Beth Mead. However, the early promise faded as defensive lapses allowed Lyon to seize the initiative.
Throughout the match, Arsenal failed to convert opportunities in the final third, struggling to break down Lyon’s defense, with limited possession and few attempts on goal. Their defensive mistakes became costly, leading to both Lyon scores.
The first goal came after Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar, misplaced a pass directly to Dumornay. Although she managed to save the initial shot, the rebound was converted. The second goal soon followed due to poor communication; Van Domselaar misread the pressure from Linsey Heaps, leading to another chance for Dumornay, who capitalized effectively.
Arsenal noticeably missed the presence of their central defender and vice-captain, Leah Williamson. Her absence was felt not just in ball progression, but also in defensive organization and leadership, crucial elements in high-stakes matches like this. Katie Reid, filling in for Williamson, provided effort but lacked the experienced composure required.
