Emotional Craig Gordon Celebrates World Cup Qualification at 42
Veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon of Scotland expressed immense joy as he qualified for his first World Cup at the age of 42. He shared that Scotland’s coach, Steve Clarke, encouraged him to continue playing instead of retiring during the summer.
Although Gordon, who plays for Hearts, has faced significant injuries over his career, he decided to extend his contract for another season after initially contemplating retirement at the end of the last campaign.
Despite not participating in games for his club this season, Gordon was called back for Scotland’s crucial matches against Greece and Denmark. With his 43rd birthday approaching just before the next summer’s finals, he played a pivotal role in their successful qualification journey.
After Scotland’s thrilling 4-2 victory over Denmark, which secured their place in the World Cup for the first time since 1998, Gordon shared his emotional reaction with BBC Scotland. “It’s been a long journey of about 20 years, filled with disappointments and tough nights, but being part of that victory tonight is unforgettable,” he said.
Gordon reflected on the weight of the moment, emphasizing, “That moment is worth all the struggles, all the hard work throughout my career. Seven hundred or eight hundred games for this one moment.”
Scotland’s memorable win included a stunning overhead kick from Scott McTominay and a brilliant late goal from substitute Kieran Tierney. The victory was capped off by Kenny McLean, who lobbed the ball over Kasper Schmeichel from midfield in dramatic fashion.
Coach Clarke praised the quality of the goals scored. “McTominay’s overhead kick was outstanding, and it may not have even been the best goal of the night,” he remarked, sharing his excitement and emotions following the game.
Clarke further elaborated on his decision-making during the match, noting, “The Danes were dominating at times, and we needed to change our approach. I had a strategy in mind for Kieran, who is crucial to the team.” He expressed surprise and joy at the unexpected brilliance of McLean’s final goal.
