Jannik Sinner – he of the 15-match winning streak – has cracked yet another rankings milestone this week. This and more in our ATP rankings report for Monday February 19.
Sinner to NO 3!
After claiming the title at Rotterdam on Sunday, 22-year-old Sinner becomes the highest-ranked Italian man in ATP history at No 3. He leapfrogs Daniil Medvedev, who was not in Rotterdam to defend his title this week.
Sinner, a winner in 32 of his last 34 matches, is currently 1585 points behind World No.1 Djokovic.
Demon Hits New High
Alex de Minaur couldn’t change the course of his lopsided rivalry with Jannik Sinner on Sunday – the Aussie falls to 0-7 lifetime against Sinner – but he does take a step higher in the rankings, reaching a career-best ranking of No 9.
The Aussie’s jump pushes Stefanos Tsitsipas out of the top 10, which is a rough blow for the Greek, who falls out of the ATP’s top 10 for the first time since February of 2019, more than five years ago.
No One-Handers in the Top 10?
Tsitsipas drop means that there are no one-handed backhands inside the Top 10 for the first time in ATP rankings history (since 1973). A rough blow for the purists…
DIAZ ACOSTA SURGING
It has been an incredible two weeks for Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta. He came to Cordoba last week with two ATP wins to his name, and departs Buenos Aires with his maiden ATP title and seven additional victories at tour-level. For his effort, the 23-year-old is the biggest riser in this week’s ATP rankings – he jumps 28 spots to a career-high 59.
His victim in Sunday’s Argentina Open final, Nicolas Jarry, has a return to the top 20 as a consolation for his loss, even though he was unable to back up his win over Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals at Buenos Aires.
Other Notable Movers
Another big riser was Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko, who jumps 12 spots to a career-high 45 thanks to his quarterfinal at Rotterdam.
Marcos Giron (+8 to 44), Alexander Bublik (+2 to 21) and Flavio Cobolli (+3 to 69) also tick career highs this week.
Federico Coria, a semi-finalist at Buenos Aires, also jumped up 21 to return to the top 100 at No 85.
