Auckland Showdown: Svitolina Set to Face Wang Xinyu in WTA 250 Final

At the WTA 250 ASB Classic in Auckland, Elina Svitolina, the top seed, and 7th-seeded Wang Xinyu secured their places in the final after thrilling semi-final victories. The two players will face off on Sunday for the championship title.

Svitolina achieved her spot in the final by defeating America’s Iva Jovic, the tournament’s third seed, with a score of 7-6(5), 6-2. Wang’s path was no less dramatic, as she fought her way past the fourth-seeded Alex Eala from the Philippines, saving a match point in a hard-fought battle that ended 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Both semi-final matches showcased the resilience of young talent, but ultimately, experience played a decisive role. Wang’s semi-final encounter against Eala lasted nearly three hours and was filled with momentum shifts. Initially, Wang established a commanding 4-0 lead in the first set, but Eala responded strongly, winning six consecutive games and taking the set.

“It was a crazy battle from the start to the end, for sure,” said Wang after her match. “She’s an absolute fighter, and I feel more pressure when I’m ahead than at the beginning of the match. I’m just really happy I got through this one today, reaching my first-ever final.”

Wang’s quest for victory included a sequence where she regained momentum after being on the verge of defeat. She leveled the second set after trailing 3-0 and showcased tenacity, overcoming a match point against her before ultimately claiming the last three games to force a deciding set.

On the adjacent court, the clash between Svitolina and Jovic had its own thrills. Jovic started strong, racing to a 3-0 lead, but Svitolina’s experience shone through as she clawed her way back to take the set in a tiebreak. The second set saw Svitolina find her groove, as she dropped the first game but won six of the next seven, handling the pressure effortlessly to close the match in just over an hour and a half.

Reflecting on her younger opponent, Svitolina noted, “We practiced together before the tournament, so I knew what to expect from her. She’s really surprised me with how well she’s striking the ball and moving on the court. There will definitely be many more titles for her in the future.”

Svitolina, a former WTA Finals champion, will be seeking her 19th title in a professional career that has often included ups and downs. This week has been a turnaround for her after arriving on a four-match losing streak. With her recent victories, she has revitalized her form on the Auckland courts, having previously finished as runner-up in the event in 2024.

The final match on Sunday will mark the second encounter between Svitolina and Wang, with Svitolina winning their last meeting in straight sets during the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2024. As they prepare for their championship showdown, both players bring a mixture of excitement and determination to the court, promising a compelling finale.
