Auckland Upset: Fran Jones Triumphs Over Navarro in WTA 250 Opener

In a thrilling start to the WTA 250 ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, Fran Jones secured a monumental victory over the 2nd-seeded Emma Navarro, marking the first time in her career that she has defeated a Top 20 player. In a closely contested match that lasted over two hours, Jones triumphed with a scoreline of 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Jones, who had considered stepping away from her tennis career just months ago, demonstrated remarkable resilience against the American, who is currently ranked World No. 15 and was a semi-finalist at the 2024 US Open. The encounter was not only a battle on the court but also a test of endurance against the unpredictable Auckland weather.

Reflecting on her performance, Jones remarked, “I’m absolutely knackered! The last few days have been tough, especially as getting ready for the new season can be complicated for any player. Emma can undoubtedly elevate her game, all players can. For me, maintaining a positive mindset was crucial, especially in my first match of the year, and thankfully, I managed to do that.”

Despite the challenging conditions and Navarro’s technical skills, Jones managed to maintain composure and capitalize on critical moments, ultimately sealing the match with a break in the deciding set. She concluded the match strongly, ensuring her serve remained intact for the remainder of the contest after breaking Navarro early in the final set.

Although Navarro statistically outperformed Jones in several categories, including total points won, it was Jones’ ability to manage unforced errors and her poise in crucial points that secured her victory. With this win, Jones is set to face qualifier Sinja Kraus in the next round, who advanced by defeating Julia Grabher 6-3, 6-3.

Currently ranked 72nd, Jones continues to push the limits of her career. This victory not only adds to her list of achievements but also comes on the heels of her previous significant win against World No. 70 Greet Minnen at the 2025 Eastbourne Open. Born with Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia (EEC), which impacts her dexterity, Jones’s triumphs on the court have inspired many and showcase her determination to overcome personal and professional challenges.

Following Jones’s upset, the tournament witnessed other notable matches. The 3rd seed Iva Jovic also advanced past Gabriela Knutson in a tough encounter, with a final score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, and will next meet Sara Bejlek. Meanwhile, 7th seed Wang Xinyu had to battle against Caty McNally, ultimately winning 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to set up a match against Renata Zarazua, who ousted former US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

British player Katie Boulter, currently ranked 112th and receiving a wild card into the tournament, is poised to face Yuliia Starodubtseva in her first-round match on Tuesday, intensifying the competitive spirit of the ASB Classic as players vie for early-season momentum.
