Felix Auger-Aliassime seemed sick yesterday at the 2024 Montpellier Open, but the Canadian recovered well enough to win comfortably today and advance to the semi-final.
The Canadian had an interesting start to the year, with the Australian Open being a solid but not sensational outing. He’s had somewhat of a down year last year after taking a huge step forward the year before.
It’s been a very interesting season so far, but being indoors is good for him. He’s been really good indoors traditionally, and that’s been happening this week as well. He won a few matches to reach the quarter-final, and a solid draw gave him a decent opponent, whom he used to secure a spot in the semi-final.
The opponent was a native French player, Harold Mayot, who is talented, but certainly not on the level of Auger-Aliassime, and fans saw that in the match. The opening set was close because both players started a bit erratic.
After winning their first service games, both lost their serves twice; however, the score remained tied. Eventually, the Canadian was able to jump ahead and win the opening set 7-5.
The second set was much easier for the Canadian because his opponent couldn’t hold on anymore. The talent difference was simply too much.
Auger-Aliassime looked far more confident in his game, which showed in the rallies. He could overwhelm his opponent rather comfortably, taking an early lead and then adding another one later.
The final score was 7-5 6-1, and an excellent win for the Canadian. He’s looking really strong at the ATP 250 event in Montpellier and will be hoping to get to the final because that would be really good for his confidence.
The opponent in the semi-final is Alexander Bublik, who bested compatriot Alexander Schevchenko in the quarter-finals earlier today. That’s never going to be an easy matchup.
