Felix Auger-Aliassime had a disappointing 2023 campaign on the ATP Tour, and the 2024 season isn’t starting any better.
At the end of the 2022 season, the Canadian won three consecutive titles, while winning 16 straight matches, and thanks to the late push, he qualified for his maiden ATP Finals, finishing the year as the world no. 6 in the ATP Rankings.
However, last year, Auger-Aliassime struggled with physical problems and form, and slowly but surely, he started falling down the rankings, exiting the Top 10 in June, and never returning into it, eventually ending the year as the world no. 29.
Ahead of the new season, the 23-year-old admitted that he would like to improve his ability to recover from injuries, and his first two matches, which did not happen, just prove that.
At the 2024 United Cup, where Auger-Aliassime was supposed to be teaming up with Leylah Fernandez, he was supposed to start against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, but pulled out of the match.
Steven Diez replaced Auger-Aliassime, who explained that knee pain stopped him from playing. Now, he will miss yet another tie.
After beating Chile, Canada will fight for the quarterfinal spot against Greece, and their no. 1 men’s singles player was supposed to take on Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, who too, seems to be struggling with an injury.
However, Auger-Aliassime pulled out of the match, and he will be once again replaced by Steven Diez, who will want to step up and attempt to challenge the Top 10 player.
For Auger-Aliassime, it’s a really bad start of the season, which was supposed to be his comeback season to the top of the men’s tennis. But already in the first days of the season, he was forced to pull out from matches, and that doesn’t indicate anything good.
